TUNAI Firefly LDAC Bluetooth Receiver: A Pragmatic Upgrade for Retro Cars
As self-acknowledged retro car enthusiasts, we’re always on the lookout for gadgets that will enable our beloved classic rides to embrace the digital age without undermining their unique ‘old-world’ charm. Enter, the TUNAI Firefly LDAC Bluetooth Receiver. We’re delighted to share our comprehensive review of this wireless audio Bluetooth adapter – a potential lifesaver for many proud owners of cars lacking in-built Bluetooth functionality.
Plugging in the Firefly: User Experience
Upon unboxing, the first thing we noticed about the Firefly is its straightforward simplicity. It doesn’t demand any intricate installation, instead transforming your car’s audio system into wireless and Bluetooth compatible with uncomplicated ease. The fact that it auto-starts with the engine or speakers and requires no separate charging is a huge win in our book.
Sound Performance
We found the audio quality to be remarkably good, topping many competitor models. Thanks to the SONY LDAC codec and Cirrus Logic audiophile-grade 127dB SNR DAC technology, the Firefly LDAC supports high-resolution audio over Bluetooth connections at up to 990 kbps. The absence of irritating hissing and humming sounds, commonly plaguing most receivers, was also quite impressive. However, it’s only fair to note that the music quality seemed to be device-dependent, with the sound quality from iPhones via AAC coding not vastly superior to pre-existing headphones.
Connectivity & Convenience
Its ability to remember up to 8 paired devices for auto-connectivity was a welcome feature. Further, it allows for dual-device pairing, which was handy for quick music sharing. We found that it integrates seamlessly with most cars’ built-in systems, connecting automatically upon engine-start, and demonstrating barely any delay in connecting or disconnecting. However, some of our team experienced slight issues, with reports of loose USB connections that require a bit of fiddling to ensure stability.
Meet the Companion: The TUNAI Connect App
The Firefly LDAC was a tad too reliant on the TUNAI Connect App, in our opinion. The app is required for everything from initial product pairing to customized EQ setting, making it slightly daunting for users without constant internet access. That being said, when the app worked, it certainly enhanced user experience with functionalities such heated ground loop isolator and EQ settings customization.
Inconsistencies: Areas Needing Improvement
While the Firefly LDAC got much right, there were a couple of glaring weaknesses. We were unable to make hands-free calls using the product, which is rather disappointing. Also, it lacked physical buttons for basic operations like play and pause. This device’s convenience quotient took a bit of a hit since these operations had to be controlled via the smartphone. Furthermore, a minor issue of static noise when accelerating with no music playing was reported by some team members, though this was negligible.
The Verdict
In conclusion, the TUNAI Firefly LDAC Bluetooth Receiver is a competent addition to your retro car, despite a few hiccups. Its strengths lie in its superb audio quality, convenience, and connectivity. While there is room for improvement, especially regarding hands-free call support and the dependence on the companion app, we feel it still offers good value for money. Overlooking the minor issues, we have to say it’s a pretty neat gadget that effectively bridges the gap between retro charm and modern functionality.
